AUTO ACCIDENT

Last Rites Are Held On Saturday For Mrs. Frank Bennett

A sad and tragic traffic accident resulted in the death of Mrs. Frank Bennett, Le Mars, on a main, business street at 2:00 p.m. last Thursday.

Mr. and Mrs. Bennett drove down from their home to enable her to do some shopping. Parking in front of the former Luken furniture store, she stepped out of the car and started to cross to the opposite side of the street. A front wheel of the auto having ran over the curb, Mr. Bennett placed the car in reverse to move out, lost control, dashed backward and struck and ran over his wife on the pavement, stopping when, colliding with another car at the curb.

Nearby persons rushed to the relief of Mrs. Bennett and assisted in having her removed to Sacred Heart Hospital, where it was at once determined that she had passed away. Mr. Bennett, overcome by shock was also taken to the hospital, but soon recovered after receiving first aid.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist church at Le Mars, Rev. Kenneth Humpleby officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Albert were vocalists. Casket bearers were nephews of the deceased: Vince McMahon, Phil McMahon, Jerry Kurth, Barrie Swift, Hugh Swift and Burton Swift.

A large gathering of relatives and friends attended the burial service in the Akron Riverside cemetery, where she was laid to rest beside a deceased child.

Mrs. Bennett, the former Ruth Mary Phippin, was born July, 30, 1890, at Spirit Lake, Iowa, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred F. Phippin. She came to Akron in 1913 to reside with her brother-in- law and sister, Mr. and. Mrs. Ray A. Smith. On December 26, 1913, she was united in, marriage with William Swift here, and two sons, Lowell, and Dernell, were born to them. In 1942 she became a resident of Le Mars, and there on December 4, 1955, she married Frank G. Bennett and that has since remained their home.

While residing in Akron, Mrs. Bennett was a member and active in the affairs of the First Church of Christ. At Le Mars she was a member of the First Baptist church and Esther Circle. The pleasant personality and helpful nature of Mrs. Bennett won for her the esteem of a host of friends, who will long cherish her memory.

Sincere sympathy is extended the husband, children and other relatives in their sudden bereavement.

Survivors include the widower; two sons, Lowell L. Swift of Seattle, Wash, and Dernell R. Swift of Sioux City; three step-daughters, Mrs. Bessie McMahon of Sioux City; Mrs. Daisy Sayles of California, and Mrs. Gladys Huebner of Hawarden, Iowa; a step-son, Clarence Bennett of Hawarden; a sister, Mrs. Helen Mapes of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
