PIONEER AKRON WOMAN CALLED BY DEATH THURSDAY

Last Rites Held For Mrs. Abbie Waterbury Sunday Afternoon

Mrs. Abbie Waterbury, a pioneer resident of Plymouth county, passed away at her home in, this city Thursday, May 30, 1940, after an illness of about three weeks of heart trouble, aged 83 years, 9 months and 14 days.

Abbie Evelyn Mudgett was born August 16, 1856, in Milwaukee, Wis., and Was one of a family of ten children of David and Abbie Carpenter Mudgett The Mudgett family were among the early settlers in Plymouth county, coming by covered wagon in 1871 and settling in the Broken Kettle neighborhood, where they farmed until 1873, when the family moved to Akron (then Portlandville).

Abbie: Mudgett and; S. A.. Waterbury were united in marriage July 9, 1875, and for the next three years made their home in Elk Point, S. D., where Mr. Waterbury conducted a shoe shop. About the year 1878, Mr. and Mrs. Waterbury filed on a claim three miles west of Hawarden, where they resided until 1886, when they moved onto a farm adjoining, Akron, for which they had exchanged, their farm west of Hawarden. Akron has since remained the family home. Mr. and Mrs. Waterbury were the parents of four children, Delbert L., Mamie, Daisy and Fern. Mr. Waterbury preceded her in death May 4,1912. Since the death of her youngest daughter, Mrs. Fern Greenleaf, several years ago, she had resided with her son-in-law Elmer M. Greenleaf.

Mrs. Waterbury was a kind and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, giving first thought to home affairs and ever having, in mind the welfare of those near and dear to her. A helpful and sympathetic neighbor and friend, she wilt long be remembered for her many good deeds. Mrs. Waterbury had been a member of the Akron Methodist church since 1895.

Left, to mourn her departure are: One son, Delbert L., of Akron; two daughters, Mrs. Mamie Edgar, of Sioux City, and Mrs. Chas. S. Bertrand, of Spink, S. D.; two sisters, Mrs. Madora Smith, of California and Mrs. Myra O'Connor, of Sioux City; also by. eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the D. L. Waterbury home, conducted by Rev. W. H. Lease, pastor of the Methodist church. Miss Mary Bucket and Mrs. W. H. Lease sang hymns, with Mrs. W. J. Brunner as accompanist.

The pallbearers were H. H. Wetzeler, Grant Gassman, J. E. Brady, EC Gusman, Wm. Dirks , and Miles Cunningham. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.

Relatives from a distance in attendance at the funeral were : Mrs. Delia Lindsey, Myron- Muir, Eugene Muir, Mr. and Mrs. Russell. Gillespie, all of Sioux City ; Mr. and Mrs. Sylvan Waterbury and children, of Elk Point; Mr. and Mrs. Ross Booth, of Le Mars ; Mr. and Mrs. Frank BellWood, of Hawarden; Mrs. Eula -Moore and Mrs. R. G. Weeks, of Rochester, Minn.,Mrs. W. D. Hoge, of Long Beach, Ca..
