Elmer Tammen, 78, of LeMars died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 1997, at the Brentwood Good Samaritan enter in LeMars. Services were held Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig, Iowa, with the Rev. Douglas Dowling officiating. Burial was in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Heeren McHale-Wilken Post 724 of Brunsville, Iowa.
Mr. Tammen was born Oct. 1, 1919, in Grant Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of Tony and Anna (Ludwigs) Tammen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended country school in Grant Township. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He returned to the family farm, where he farmed until retiring in 1979, and moved to. Merrill, Iowa. He entered the Brentwood Good Samaritan. Center in December 1996. He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the American Legion Heeren-McHale-Wilken Post 724 and the. Plymouth County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include a brother, Henry of LeMars; two sisters-in-law. Lily Tammen of Merrill and Viola Tammen of Dell Rapids, SD.; three nephews. Rodney and his wife Rhonda Tammen of LeMars, Arlyn and his wife Liz Tammen of Coleman, S.D., and Larry and his wife Kathy Tammen of Pinesville, Louisiana; six. nieces, Marilyn and her husband Lyle Morgan of Clarion, Iowa, Janice and her husband William Renken of LeMars, Ardis Rozell of Clarion, Deloris and her husband Jack Mulligan of Luverne, Minnesota; Joan and her husband Melvin Plueger of LeMars, and Pat Tammen of Farmers City; 111.; and several great nephews and nieces and great-great nephews,and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John, George and Edward; a sister, Clara Tammen; two sisters-in-law; Nora Tammen and Emma Tammen; a nephew, Virgil Tammen; and great-nephews, Keith and Kevin Renken; and a great-great nephew, Charlie Mulligan.
