Remsen-Union class leader killed, 4 hurt in foggy crash after dance.
Andy Wiebke, 16, rural Remsen, was killed and four other youths were injured early Saturday morning in fog 4 miles north of Remsen in a 2-car collision at the intersection of two county blacktop roads.
Wiebke’s death was the sixth traffic fatality in Plymouth county this year.
A passenger in the Wiebke car, Brad Vandermolen, 17, Remsen is in fair condition at St. Luke’s medical center, Sioux City. He had been listed as critical after the 2 a.m. crash.
Driver of the other car, Daniel G. Koth 21, Marcus, was admitted to the Orange City hospital and dismissed over the weekend, a hospital spoikesman said.
A passenger in the Koth car, Mike Pederson, 21, Correctionville is reported in good condition at the Sioux Valley hospital, Cherokee.
Another of Koth’s passengers, Mark Brady, 23, Marcus, suffered facial cuts. He was taken to the Orange City hospital and was transferred with Vandermolen to St. Luke’s His condition is good.
Highway patrol state trooper Duane North reported the Koth car as westbound on the blacktop and went through a stop sign at the intersection. His car was struck by the southbound Wiebke car.
The trooper said Koth was charged with failure to stop at the stop sign and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence.
The car driven by Koth was registered to Mark Brady.
Wiebke was dead on arrival at the Orange City hospital. He had been thrown from the car, as were Koth and Vandermolen. Pederson was taken from the car.
Andy Wiebke was the owner of the car he was driving.
The Remsen youth was president of the Remsen-Union high school junior class and president of the R-U Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Remsen.
Andy was active in Remsen-Union athletics, music and drama.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran church with Rev. Julian Swanson officiating. Burial will be in Remsen city cemetery under direction of the Moeller funeral home in Remsen.
A prayer service will be held at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Monday.
Casketbearers will be classmates, Gary Schorg, Myles Konopasek, Dave Sonnichsen, John Bohnenkamp, Dan Drum, and Knute Meneely.
Andrew Joseph Wiebke was born Dec. 4, 1961. He lived at Remsen all his life with his parents on a farm south of Remsen.
His parents are Earl and Val Jean Wilhelmi Wiebke. His mother is a Le Mars native.
Survivors are his parents; his grandfather, George H. Wiebke, Remsen; two sisters, Mrs. Jack (Carole) Morio, Cedar Rapids, and Mary of Remsen; two brothers, David of Dubuque and Richard of Tempe, Ariz., and a niece, Kristen Morio. – Le Mars Daily Sentinel, Nov. 20, 1978, page 1.
