Services were held Wednesday afternoon at Fisch funeral home in Remsen for Louis Rathman, 68, lifelong resident there and who died suddenly from a heart attack Monday afternoon in Le Mars.
Mr. Rathman suffered a heart attack as he stood talking with his sister, Mrs. Emma Johnson, as she waited for a bus to return home after having visited her brother at the county home. Death was instantaneous.
Louis had been in failing health about a year, since quitting work as an operator for the West Iowa Telephone company there June 1 last year. He spent four months at the Lutheran home at Vinton, Ia., but returned to resume residence with his sister.
He had been under a doctor’s care for a heart ailment. He moved to the county home May 6, for nursing care, but was up and about the premises almost daily.
Born December 17, 1885, on a farm two miles east of Remsen, he was one of ten children of the late John and Burgadine Rathman who came there in the early 80’s from Benton county, Iowa.
After farming several years the family came to town where the father was in the hardware business, later in the insurance and real estate business. The father died in 1906; the mother in 1923.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters in infancy; his brother Albert who died in 1936, his brother John who died in 1940 and a sister, Mrs. Walter (Bertha) Schultz, Doon, who died in 1948.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Theresa Kruse of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Services at the Fish funeral home were conducted by the Rev. R. W. Meyer of Peace Lutheran church, Marcus. Interment was in the local cemetery. Pall bearers were Peter Eulberg of Alton, and r. W. Fitzsimmons, F. W. Daubendick, August Erichsen, Fred Seel and E. H. Spiecker, all of Remsen, Plymouth County. – Le Mars Globe Post, June 28, 1954, page 15.
