[Another Obituary]Mrs. Peter Lage is Claimed By Death. Former Resident Passes Away at Lake Benton, Minn; Burial Here Wednesday.
Funeral services were held here yesterday for Mrs. Peter Lage, well known former Remsen woman who passed away Sunday at her home near Lake Benton, Minn., following a long period of poor health with diabetes. She was 70 years old. Surviving are her heartbroken widower and seven children.
Mrs. Lage has been in failing health for a number of years but always was up and about her household duties until a week prior to her death when a sudden severe change came over her condition. She passed away at five o’clock Sunday morning.
The deceased lady, nee Augusta Eggers, was born in Schwastedt, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, September 26, 1868, and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In the spring of 1893 she came to this country and directly to Remsen, where on December 12 of the same year she became the wife of Peter Lage, who had previously come from Germany and was then working as a farm hand in this vicinity.
Soon after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Lage came to reside in town and after two more years Mr. Lage assumed the duties as foreman of the local maintenance crew of the Illinois Central railway. This position he held for 14 years. He resigned his position to go back to farm life and for five years the family occupied a farm five miles northeast of town. In 1915 they moved to a farm near Larchwood, Iowa, and in 1921 they moved to a fine quarter-section near Lake Benton, which Mr. Lage had previously purchased.
Mr. and Mrs. Lage worked faithfully through these many years and made a success of life, reaping the fruits of their labors in the form of a generous recompense which lead them to seek well-earned retirement. At the very time when Mrs. Lage was forced to give up the battle for life they wer considering the purchase of a comfortable home in Pipestone, Minn., in which to spend their declining years.
Mrs. Lage was a woman of a kind and generous heart—a devoted and loyal wife and mother—and her passing is a source of untold suffering in the family circle as it brought many regrets among hundreds of warm friends in this, her early-day home community and in the communities in which she subsequently lived. She was ever true to the precepts of the church in which she was a member since early childhood, and her daily life reflected the teachings she received during her youthful days in the church and in a strictly Christian home. The bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of its many Remsen friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Lage were the parents of 11 children, four of whom preceded their mother to the grave. Two died in infancy. An older son, Ernest, lost his life in an accident here in 1930 and another son, William, died the following year. The living children who with their father mourn her departure are: Mrs. Herman (Ella) Schut, Remsen; Mrs. Henry ( Lizzie) Schut, Adrian, Minn.; Alfred, at home; Mrs. Gust. (Olga) Koenck, Spencer, Iowa; Herman, Omaha; George, Lake Benton, Minn., and Mrs. Fred (Marie) Miller, Olympia, Wash. There are 16 grandchildren.
The body was brought to Remsen, arriving here Monday evening, and was taken to the Moeller undertaking parlors to await the hour of burial Wednesday. Services were held in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran church, and were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Paul Wuebben. -- Remsen Bell Enterprise
