REMSEN MAN KILLS HIMSELF. RASH ACT IS ATTRIBUTED TO DESPONDENCY OVER PROLONGED ILL HEALTH.
Despondent because of ill health, Hans Hansen, a well known pioneer of Plymouth county and a resident of Remsen for many years, took his own life by hanging. He committed the rash act in the coal shed located on his premises in the west part of Remsen.
Mr. Hansen was 76 years of age. He came to Plymouth county many years ago from Benton county, Iowa. He was a native of Germany. Besides his wife, he leaves one son, George Hansen, a resident of Remsen.
The deceased had been an invalid for many years, and for the past four or five years his condition seemed to be getting worse. It is thought that constant worry over his condition and the realization that death was not far distant prompted him to end it all by means of self destruction.
On Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Hansen went to the home of one of her neighbors, where she visited for a few hours. Mr. Hansen and the aged mother of Mrs. Hansen were left at home. During the time Mrs. Hansen was absent the deceased went to the coal shed, where his lifeless body was found by his wife. He used a clothesline, which he attached to the rafters, for his purpose.
Funeral services will be held from the home at 2:00 o’clock Saturday afternoon, Rev. Gilbert, of Pierson, officiating. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, March 9, 1928, page 5.
