REMSEN PIONEER DIES. Settled on Farm in This Vicinity Over Forty Years Ago.
Death called another well known Remsen person last Friday morning, when Mrs. Mentje Moritz, nee Fokken, a resident for sixteen years, passed away at the family home after an illness covering about five weeks with complication due to old age. She was 77 years old and is survived by eight children, David preceding her in death nine years ago.
The deceased was a native of Nordon, East Friesland, Germany, where she was born May 27, 1853. In 1880 in Nordon, Germany, she was united in marriage with David G. Moritz and two years later came with her husband to America, settling in Benson, Ill. After several years spent in Illinois the family moved to Russell, Kansas, and in July 1889, came to Iowa and settled on a farm in this vicinity. The journey from Kansas to Iowa was made in a covered wagon. The last sixteen years of her life Mrs. Moritz spent in Remsen with her son Christian. Mr. Moritz preceded her in death in 1911.
Mrs. Moritz was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical church, and was devoted to that faith all her life.
Surviving are the following children: Harm Moritz, of Kingsley; Emma, now Mrs. John Lande, of Kennedy, Minnesota; George Moritz and Christian Moritz, of Remsen; Hugo Moritz of Kingsley; and Catherine, Mrs. Henry Baldes, of Remsen. She is also survived by four brothers, two, who remained in Germany, and John Fokken of Granville, North Dakota, and Christian Fokken, of Canada, and twenty-five grand children and one great grandchild.
The funeral took place on Monday, December 22, in St. Paul’s Evangelical church. The services were conducted by Rev. Hugo Weichelt, and the burial took place in the city cemetery. Pall bearers were Milfs Griepenburg, Art Johnson, William Fokken, William Grothaus, William Dawson and Fred Hanno. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, Dec. 30, 1930, page 6.
