A life of 80 years which made her one of the oldest residents of the community, came to a sudden close last Thursday morning when Mrs. Mary Numsen, who been a resident at Remsen for 57 years, was found dead at her home, having died early that morning while alone. Physicians declared her death was due to a sudden heart seizure. She is survived by numerous close relatives and hundreds of friends, her husband and children having preceded her in death years ago. Funeral services were held last Sunday afternoon from St. Paul’s church.
Mary Numsen, nee Schutte was born February 25, 1845, in Germany. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and lived at home until the time of her marriage in 1865, to John Numsen, a native of the same place. They continued to make their home in their native land until 1873 when they came to the United States, settling at Davenport, Iowa, where they lived for seven years. Then they farmed in Benton county for a like period and in 1887 they came to Remsen, settling on a farm where they resided 15 years. Upon their retirement they came to town and the husband passed away 11 years ago. To their union three children were born, all of whom preceded their parents to the grave. There were two sons and one daughter, Fred, Henry and Martha, the latter the wife of Wm. Selken, who now lives in Hartley, Iowa. She had eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren (continued on page 4 – which is not to be found)… Le Mars Globe-Post, Monday, March 5, 1934, page 1.
