Mrs. Kate Raetz, a resident of this community for nearly forty years, passed away at her home in Remsen last Friday morning, March 31, after an illness covering a period of nearly two years with cancer of the stomach. She was 57 years and nine months of age at the time of her death, and is survived by eight children, two brothers and two sisters. She was a native of Germany. The funeral was held here Sunday afternoon.
Mrs. Raetz began to fail in health about a year and one-half ago, and last year she submitted to an operation which seemed at first to have relieved her condition considerably. However she suffered a relapse about six weeks ago, and from that time her condition rapidly grew worse. The end came at three o’clock last Friday morning.
Mrs. Kate Elizabeth Raetz was born at Hesse, Darnstadt, Germany, July 1, 1863, and with her parents she came to the United States at the age of one year. The family first located on a farm in Benton county, Iowa, and after several years there they moved to the city of Cedar Rapids. In the spring of 1883 she was united in marriage to John Raetz, also of Cedar Rapids, and immediately after their marriage the couple came to Remsen, settling on a farm in Meadow township, where they lived continuously for 33 years. In 1916 Mr. and Mrs. Raetz, with their younger children, retired and moved to town.
The deceased is survived by eight children, who are: John Raetz, Remer, Minn.; Louis Raetz, Graceville, Minn.; William and Fred Raetz, who farm near Remsen; Mrs. Emma Cargin, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Minnie Reed, Lamar, Mo., and Edward and Carl, living at home. There are also two brothers, Henry Krahling and William Krahling, of Atkins, Iowa, and two sisters, Mrs. Annie Rathje, of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Louisa Krug, of Atkins, Iowa.
Mrs. Raetz was a staunch member of the Lutheran church, and a member of St. Paul’s congregation in Remsen for many years. She was an active church worker and did considerable toward support of the church and all its social and religious activities. She enjoyed the esteem of a large circle of friends in and around Remsen, and her death was sincerely regretted by all of the friends of the family. The bereaved children have the community’s deepest sympathy.
The funeral was held last Sunday afternoon. Following brief services at the family home, services were conducted in St. Paul’s church, and interment was made in the Remsen cemetery. Rev. A. H. Juergens conducted the services. The funeral was largely attended. – Remsen Bell-Enterprise, April 22, 1922, page 1, column 7 and page 8, column 1
