Herlig L. Petersen, 94, Plymouth county native and lifelong resident, died Monday, Feb 16, 1987 after a brief illness.

Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19 at St. John’s American Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. David Kramer officiated and burial was in the Remsen City Cemetery.

The former Herlig Kloster, she was born March 8, 1892, at Marion Township to Thorvald and Sophia Nielsen Kloster. She attended school at Fredonia Township School 1.

Her marriage to Axel Petersen took place Feb. 20, 1912, at the Danish Lutheran Church, Fredonia Township. He preceded her in death.

The couple farmed in Fredonia Township until 1946. they moved to Hazelcrest, Ill., where they lived for 14 years. They moved to Oyens in 1960 and she moved to Le Mars in 1969.

She was a member of St. John’s Church and ALCW and the Brentwood Auxiliary.

Survivors are her son, Woodrow Petersen of Park Forest, Ill., two daughters, Mrs. W.R. (Irene) Schmidt of Vancouver, Wash., and Mrs. Stanley (Blanche) Mohning of Le Mars; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Niels Kloster of Remsen.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and six sisters.
