Fredonia Resident 7 Decades

Dies on Good Friday

Funeral services for Christian P. Kloster, prominent Fredonia township retired farmer who died at Sacred Heart hospital, Le Mars, April 15, were held Monday in Gethsemane Lutheran church at Oyens, with interment in the Remsen community cemetery. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. Delpho Petersen of Marcus, who serves the Oyens church.

Mr. Kloster, in apparently good health, was up and about his home with occasional visits to Oyens and Remsen until the time of his terminal illness but two days before his death. Following a stroke he spent two days at Sacred Heart hospital. The end came there at 10 o’clock Friday morning.

Born in Denmark

Christian Peter Kloster was born November 9, 1874, in the town of Rodding in Denmark. With brother he came to this country and to Plymouth county at the age of 14 years, directly to this community to join an older brother, the late Thorvald Kloster who had settled on a Fredonia township farm and who later served for many years on the board of supervisors. The brothers lived together for a time.

Successful Farmer

Mr. Kloster married Christina Nielsen on September 8, 1897, the marriage taking place in the Thorvald Kloster home. The couple then set out for themselves, buying an eight[y] acre farm nearby, to which they twice added as their diligence bore fruit until they owned on of the choicest quarter sections in the area. Mrs. Kloster died in 1907.

Church, Civic Interests

Christian Kloster was one of the Remsen-Oyens community’s outstanding citizens. In his earlier years he was a prime leader in the organization of the Gethsemane Lutheran congregation which originally was built on a country site northeast of Oyens and later moved into that town. He took an interest in all civic affairs, particularly those pertaining to the community schools, and among his friends he reflected the coaching he received in a Christian home as he dealt fairly and loyally with those with whom he came in contact in both the business and social world. He was a highly devoted family man; a kind and considerate husband, father and friend and although he lived to a “ripe” old age his unexpected death came as a source of keenest regret over the countryside where he had lived for more than seven decades.

Survivors

Surviving are two daughters and three sons: A daughter, Mrs. Tina Miller and a son, Jack, live on the farm where Mr. Kloster shared his home in recent years. Others are Mrs. John Nielsen and Nick Kloster of Le Mars and Harold Kloster of Remsen. There are 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Surviving also is a brother, Walter Kloster of Ponca City, Okla., and a sister, Elise, in Denmark.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Andrew and Thorvald, in this country, and five brothers and a sister in Denmark.

During the funeral services Mr. and Mrs. Emil Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Kenmore Jordahl sang “A Child of the King,’ “A Touch of His Hand” and “Abide With Me.”

In charge of the flowers were Mrs. Elmer Nielsen, Mrs. James Peterson and Mrs. Delnar Kloster. Pallbearers were James Peterson, Woodrow Peterson, Stanley Mohning, Elmer Nielsen, Norman Kloster and Delnar Kloster, all grand-nephews of the deceased.

Christian P. Kloster, 85, prominent retired farmer living northwest of Remsen, died Friday at Sacred Heart hospital after an illness of two days.

Funeral services were Monday afternoon at Gethsemane Lutheran church at Oyens. Rev. Delpho Petersen of Marcus officiated and burial was in the Remsen community cemetery under the direction of the Moeller funeral home, Remsen.

Mr. Kloster was born Nov. 9, 1874, in Denmark and came to this country at the age of 14 to join his brother, Thorvald, on the farm in Fredonia township where he had resided ever since. The late Thorvald Kloster was a longtime Plymouth county supervisor.

Christian Kloster married Christina Nielsen Sept 8, 1897. She died in 1907. Mr. Kloster had been sharing his home with a daughter, Mrs. Tina Miller and a son, Jack.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. John Nielsen of Le Mars, and three sons, Nick, of Le Mars; Jack, and Harold, of Remsen.

Funeral services for Christian Peter Kloster, well known prominent Fredonia township retired farmer, who died Friday, April 15 at Sacred Heart hospital, Le Mars were held today, April 18 at 2 p.m. at Gethsemane Lutheran Church at Oyens with Rev. Delpho Peterson officiating. Burial was in Remsen cemetery under direction of the Moeller Funeral home.

Mr. Kloster was born November 9, 1874 at Rodding, Denmark and came to the United States in 1890. He was a resident of Plymouth county for 70 years. He was a retired farmer and had reached the age of 85 years. He passed away at the hospital after having suffered a stroke two days earlier at his farm home where he lived with a daughter, Mrs. Tina Miller, and a son, Jack. He was a charter member of Gethsemane Lutheran church.

His marriage to Christina Nielsen took place September 8, 1897. She passed away in 1907.

Survivors include five children; Mrs. Tina Miller, Nick Kloster and Jack Kloster all of Le mars; Harold Kloster of Remsen and Mrs. John (Herlig) Nielsen of Le Mars. Twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren also survive. Also surviving is a brother, Walter, of Ponca City, Oklahoma and a sister, Elisa in Denmark.

Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Andrew and Thorvald in the states and five brothers and a sister in Denmark.
