Gregg Featherston, Bailiff, Councilman, Cattle Feeder, Dead at 83 of Injuries

Gregg Featherston, 83, lifelong Plymouth county resident, and former longtime LeMars city councilman, died Saturday (April 16, 1977) a week after being injured in a 1-car accident north of Kingsley.

Mr. Featherston was traveling on the Kingsley-Hinton road Good Friday when he lost control of his car and went into a ditch.

He sustained a fractured leg and facial cuts and bruises. Mr. Featherston was hospitalized at Sioux City St. Luke's medical center since that time.

He was born Oct. 1, 1893, in Union township to John and Leticia (sic--Lettia) Croston Featherston.

He was a graduate of Union township school where he later served on the school board for a number of years. He also attended Western Union college, now Westmar.

Mabel Dempster and Mr. Featherston were married Dec. 29, 1915, in LeMars. They farmed in Union township until they retired to LeMars in 1949. He was also a well-known, prominent cattle feeder.

Mrs. Featherston died May 5, 1969. Mr. Featherston maintained his own apartment at 129 9th St. SE in LeMars.

He served for 17 years as district court bailiff at the court house in LeMars. Prior to that time he served as a LeMars city councilman. While living on the farm in Union township he was a member of the Union township consolidated school board.

Mr. Featherston was a member of the Methodist church, LeMars Masonic lodge, Sioux City consistory, Abu Bekr shrine, Order of the Eastern Star and LeMars Elks club.

He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers, Elmer, Walter and Fred, and two sisters, Katherine Kitterman and Cora Payne.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Mauer funeral chapel, LeMars. Rev. Everett Staats will officiate and burial will be in LeMars Memorial cemetery.

Survivors are his children, Lauren and Virginia Featherston, Peoria, Ill.; Gerald and Nina Featherston, LeMars; Philip and Celesta Krieg, rural Kingsley. There are 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
