Darrell Dwight “Hushy” Schulz Sr, 86, of Le Mars, Iowa, went to his Lord and Savior after passing away at his home, surrounded by family, on November 11, 2025.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 22, at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation with the family present will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will continue until the service time, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials can be directed to the family.

Darrell was born to Mildred (Peterson) and Leroy Schulz Sr on December 23, 1938, in rural Merrill, Iowa. He married Cathlin “Cathy” Boetger in 1963. Together they raised five children born of this marriage.

Darrell attended the Le Mars Community Schools. Besides Le Mars, Darrell lived in rural Plymouth County; Merrill, Iowa; and Waterville, Minnesota. He had fond memories of sledding downhill at Boxcar Junction (Kluckhohn School location). He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings.

Darrell was a self-taught handyman and worked a wide variety of jobs, including: Schuster Company, Joe’s Ready Mix in Hawarden; Klingbeil Mink Farm; cleaning and maintenance for the Merrill, Waterville, and Le Mars school systems; and painting houses. He also performed construction at various locations, including numerous additions and repairs at Lally’s Eastside Restaurant.

Darrell is survived by his wife Cathy; daughters Crystal (Brian) Coon, Brenda (Mark) Sturgeon, and Robin (Justin) Jongerius all of Le Mars; and Tina (Brian) Luinstra of Ashton; brothers Manuel (Nancy) Schulz and Leroy “Junior” Schulz; sisters Diane Kamstra and Sharon Keller; brothers-in-law Mark Saltsgiver, Gerald Lewis, Jim Hanna, and Randy (Ardis) Boetger; and sisters-in-law Bonnie Connor and Carol Nelson; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Darrell was preceded in death by his son, Darrell Schulz Jr.; parents, Mildred and Leroy Schulz; brothers Bill “Big Boy” Schulz and Alvin “Duke” Schulz; sisters Betty Saltsgiver, Paulette Lewis, Helen Jaros, and Shirley Ainsworth; brothers/sisters-in-law Gene Nelson, Beverly Hanna, Betty Schulz, Pete Kamstra, Charles Keller, Larry Connor, Joni Schulz, Sandy Schulz, John Jaros, and Bill Ainsworth; grandson Jagar Marcus King; nieces Stacey Boetger, Linda Larkin, and Terri Meyer; and great-nephew Heath Bermel.
