Velton C. Barr, longtime Akron resident and retired police officer died Monday (July 27, 1981) in the Akron city hospital of a brief illness.
Mr. Barr served 40 years on the Akron police force, beginning his career June 24 and retiring in June 1964. His long career is law enforcement brought him recognition for his efficient, conscientious and dependable attention to duty. He was well-known by law officials in the surrounding community for his assistance and cooperation in law enforcement.
He was made an honorary member of the Plymouth county Peace Officer’s Association on September 16, 1980, for his contribution to law enforcement.
Mr. Barr was born March 2, 1899 to Gran and Laura Gelinas Barr in Akron. He attended school in Akron and was a veteran of World War I. Before entering law enforcement he assisted his father for a few years in the hauling a house moving business.
He married Mildred Pike, October 2, 1922, at Elk Point. After retirement they moved to Fresno, California, where they resided until her death May 29, 1973, when Mr. Barr returned to Akron to make his home.
He was a lifetime member of Hoschler American Legion post of Akron.
He is survived by a foster daughter, Phyllis Stace Hasenbank; three brothers Bruce Barr of Evanston, Ill., D. A. Barr of Kenosha, Wis., and Garvis Barr of Mountain Home, Ark.; two foster granddaughters; and many friends and relatives.
Funeral services are tentatively set for 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 31, under the direction of Schroeder funeral home of Akron. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery, Akron.
