Daniel Wesley Dawdy son of Melvin Wesley and June Arlene (Green) Dawdy, was born October 15, 1943, in Columbia, South Carolina. He entered into eternal rest on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at his home in Little Sioux, Iowa.

Daniel was raised near Westfield, Iowa and attended school there. In 1961 he enlisted with the United States Army and served until being honorable discharged in 1963.

On October 22, 1963, Dan was united in marriage to Diane Fay Pies in Elk Point, South Dakota. To this union five children were born: Jeff, Troy, Tabitha, Michael and Daniel, Jr. Dan had lived in the Merrill and LeMars area until retiring to Little Sioux, Iowa. For twenty-seven years, he was an over-the-road trucker until failing health force him to retire.

Dan was a member of the American Legion, had served on the Little Sioux City Council and Fire Department and was a member of the Church of Christ. He enjoyed music, fishing, barbecuing and sitting outdoors on his picnic table.

Dan is survived by his wife of 49 years, Diane of Little Sioux, IA; four sons: Jeff Dawdy and wife Melissa of Burbank, SD, Troy Dawdy of Council Bluffs, IA ; Michael Dawdy of Little Sioux, IA and Daniel Dawdy, Jr. and fiancé Tonya McLaughlin of Vermillion, SD; thirteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; eight sisters; three brothers; and numerous nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and June Dawdy; one brother, Dean Dawdy; niece, Mindy Carda and nephew, Jason Dawdy.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at the Whiting Christian Church in Whiting, Iowa. Following the funeral service there was a U.D. Military Flag Presentation by Emery Johnson American Legion Post 481. Cremation rites followed the funeral service. Music for the service included frecorded selections; “Seminole Wind,” “That’s My Job,” Amazing Grace” “I Know Who Hold Tomorrow” and Daddy Never Was The Cadillac Kind.”

Pallbearers were Jeff Dawdy, Troy Dawdy, Mike Dawdy, Dan Dawdy, Jr., Jay Hardnett and Derik Hardnett. Honorary pallbearers were Dan’s Grandchildren and his brother-in-law, Bob Pies. Visitation was held on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Root Funeral Home in Onawa.
