Sudden Heart Attack Is Fatal To Well Known Former Akron Man
Brief mention was made in these columns last week of the death of a former well known local resident, Louis W. Koch, who passed away Tuesday, May 31, in a hospital at Phoenix, Ariz., of a sudden heart attack, after being in failing health the past few months. He was 72 years, 6 months and 17 days of age.
Mr. Koch was born here November 14, 1887, a son of Mr. and Mrs. August Koch, who farmed near Akron, and here he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage with Miss Claire Pollock, of Akron, on June 21, 1911, and two sons and three daughters were born to them.
Mr. Koch was greatly interested in sports, particularly golf and baseball. After moving to Sioux City with his family, he was professional at Morningside Country Club for about 12 years and was also similarly employed in Arizona, near Glendale, his home.
Survivors include his wife, Claire; two sons, Virgil, of Glendale, Calif. and Kenneth, of Whittier, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. W. J. Winkler, of Whittier and Mrs. Phyllis Rhem, of San Diego, Calif. three brothers, John, Emil and Herman of Akron; a step-sister, Mrs. May Ross of Akron; a step-brother, Fred Koch of Guthrie Center, Iowa, two grandsons, nephews and nieces.
The body was returned to Sioux City and then to Akron for the final rites, the funeral being held in Wesley Methodist church, Rev. C. L. Guinn officiating. Many local and Sioux City friends were in attendance, Mrs. C. L. Guinn was soloist and Mrs. Orin Harris was accompanist.
Nephews of the deceased acting as pallbearers were William Koch, Donald Koch, John Wilken, James Gabel, Herbert Schroeder and Elmer, Borchers. Members of Freedom Lodge, No. 434, A. F. & A. M. of which Mr. Koch had been a member for many years were in charge of the committal services in Riverside cemetery.
