ANOTHER CHILD OF THIS COMMUNITY CLAIMED BY POLIO

Marlene Anne Klemme, Aged 7 Years—Funeral Services Held Tuesday

The third death of a resident of this community from the dread poliomyelitis occurred Saturday morning, November 13, 1948, when Marlene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Klemme, east of town, passed away in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sioux City, at the age of 7 years and 23 days.

The child had been ailing somewhat for several days, but it was not until just before she was taken to the hospital on Friday that the exact nature of her illness could be determined. It was the most serious type of the disease, known as bulbar poliomyelitis and nothing could be done to relieve her condition.

Marlene Anne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Klemme, was born October 20, 1941, at the Akron Hospital.

She is survived by her parents, a younger brother Merlin; her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Lemen, of Tempe, Arizona; her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Emrey Klemme, of Akron; her great-grandmothers, Mrs. Folkert Schmidt, of Craig, Iowa, and Mrs. Annie Lemen, of Akron; nine uncles and aunts and numerous other relatives, and a host of friends who were numbered by her acquaintances.

Marlene was a pupil in the second grade of the Akron public school. She was a bright and affectionate child, always happy and mirthful, and beloved by her schoolmates and teachers, by whom she will be sorely missed as well as by her family.

The community extends its heartfelt sympathy to the parents, little brother and other relatives in their bereavement.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Rossow Funeral home, conducted by Rev. Carl Holdsworth, pastor of the local Church of Christ, and Rev. C. R. Dayton, of Sioux City, a former pastor of the local Church of Christ, and Rev. C. R. Dayton, of Sioux City, a former pastor here. Hymns were sung by H. J. Behmer. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
