Maude L. Johnson, 95, of Le Mars, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Maude L. Dunn was born May 5, 1909, near Villisca, the daughter of Charles B. and Sadie L. (Graham) Dunn. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church at Villisca. Maude was raised on the family farm in Montgomery County and graduated from Villisca High School in 1926. Following high school, Maude received her Normal School training and taught country school in Montgomery County.

Maude was united in marriage to Ralph J. Cox on Feb. 4, 1932, at Plattsmouth, Neb. Maude and Ralph farmed in Adams County, Iowa until Ralph's death on Oct. 3, 1950. She then continued teaching and enrolled at Drake University to pursue her degree in education.

Maude later married Alvy M. Johnson on July 16, 1954. Maude and Alvy lived in many communities in Kansas. She continued to teach school for many years. She retired and lived in Arkansas City, Kan. She moved to Le Mars in 1995 to be near her daughter.

Maude was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Arkansas City, Kan., and also taught Sunday School and participated in her women's circle group. After she moved to Le Mars, she worshiped at First United Methodist Church. A passion in life was her gift for teaching. She also enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and playing board games.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John C. and Marjorie Cox of McGregor, Minn.; two daughters, Gini Roe of Le Mars and Peggy and her husband, Richard Osborne, of Greeley, Colo.; 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph Cox on Oct. 3, 1950; a sister, Florence Kehr in 1992; two grandchildren, Merri (Roe) McCrea and James Michael Cox in infancy; two great-grandsons, Dale A. Brekke and Moises "Moy" Langhorst; and a son-in-law, Gene Roe.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at the Carlsen Funeral Home, with Pastor Jason Larson of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment of the ashes will be at 1 p.m. Friday, at the Stringtown Cemetery near Lenox. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. Thursday, with the family present to greet friends from 5 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
