Fred Hancer Taken by Death

Fred Hancer, a pioneer resident of Northwest Iowa, died at his home in Merrill, Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Hancer has lived in Merrill for
many years and had many friends in this vicinity. He was the father of Mrs. E. M. Winter of Hinton.

The funeral service will be held at the Merrill Methodist Church Saturday afternoon.

Funeral services for Fred Hancer, who died suddenly January 13, were held Saturday, January 17, at the Methodist church. Rev. A.F. Schuldt officiated and interment was in the Merrill cemetery.

Fred Hancer was born April 21, 1849, in Rumburg, Suffolk, England. He came to America in 1856 making the trip in a sailing vessel requiring six weeks time to cross. Coming direct from New York he settled in Iowa City. On November 21, 1871, he was married to Emma House and in 1876 in 1876 came to Merrill in a covered wagon where he and his wife engaged in farming on a homestead site until 1902 when they retired and moved to town.

To this union were born six children, three of whom preceded him in death. The were Frank, Parley, and Mrs. Edith Hancer Snyder. His wife Emma, died September 13, 1917.

Surviving are three children, Mrs. Estella Winter, of Hinton, Harry Hancer, of Merrill, and Mrs. Hazel Nielson, of Hyle Park, Utah, and his widow, Mary, of Merrill.
