G. C. GRIMES HOMESTEADED HERE IN THE SIXTIES.
G. C. Grimes, one of the pioneer homesteaders of this county, died at the Sacred Heart hospital on Monday shortly before midnight, following a four weeks illness. Death was due to dropsy and heart trouble. Mr. Grimes had been in poor health for several months, but was able to be around until he went to the hospital four weeks ago.
Giles C. Grimes was born in Calhoun county, Michigan, on November 20, 1844, and grew to young manhood there, attending school and working on a farm. He was united in marriage in July, 1866, with Miss Catherine Giles (sic-her maiden name was Ahern), at Dakota City, Neb. She passed away six years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Grimes came to Plymouth county in 1869 and homesteaded three miles northeast of town where they lived for many years, moving a few years ago to the Grimes place just east of the city limits.
Mr. Grimes leaves one son, Charles, of Oyens. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Townsend, of Manteno, Illinois. Mrs. Hartley Butler of this city is a niece of the deceased.
The remains were taken to the Grimes home at Oyens and the funeral held from there on Wednesday, services being held at St. Joseph’s church, Mgr. F. W. Pape officiating.
Mr. Grimes was well known to all the older settlers and had a wide acquaintance. He was a good citizen and neighbor and esteemed by a large circle of friends.
