Darlene Johnson, 91 of Akron, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at the Akron Care Center in Akron.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron, Iowa. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation with the family present will begin at 5:00 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all on Friday, July 8, 2022 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. Arrangements are with Rexwinkel Funeral Home of Akron.
Darlene Grace Schneider was born on October 12, 1930 in Sioux City, Iowa to William and Catherine (Easton) Schneider. She was raised in rural Akron and attended country school. Darlene then attended and graduated from Akron High School in 1949.After graduation, Darlene worked in the office of a department store in Sioux City for a short time.
Darlene was united in marriage to Darwin Dean Johnson on February 25, 1950 in South Sioux City, Nebraska. Early on, they lived on a farm in Plymouth County, Iowa until moving to a farm in Union County, South Dakota where Darlene worked alongside Darwin on the farm for over 65 years.
Darlene was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron where she was a member of the ladies circle, taught Sunday School, and arranged flowers for the church for many years. Darlene and Darwin were long time members of YoMaCos as well. Darlene also enjoyed volunteering for election days.
Darlene was a gifted seamstress, making many clothing and household items over the years. She was a great baker; there was always coffee on and cookies to share with anyone who entered her home. She was a talented artist, making ceramics and arranging floral designs. She loved her large gardens where she grew many flowers and assorted vegetables. Darlene and Darwin also enjoyed many winters in Arizona.
Darlene’s favorite time was spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. Darlene was a loving, caring, and compassionate mother and grandmother. There was nothing more important to Darlene than family.
Darlene is survived by three children: Gerald (Helen) Johnson of Plattsmouth, NE, Linda Masek of Polk City, IA, and Lynn (Rhonda) Johnson of Akron, IA; 16 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.
Darlene is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Darwin; three granddaughters: Lisa Oetken, Rachel Oetken, and Tonia Murphy; and four siblings: Milton (Dorothy) Schneider, Lois (Hershell) Berner, Marilyn (Claude ‘Cork’) Burris, and Donna (Eli) Andresen.
