LIFELONG RESIDENT HERE DIES AT HOME AUGUST 17 AT AGE 73 YEARS

St Mary's Catholic church was crowded Monday morning when funeral services were held for Mrs. Mary [Arens] Hatz, lifelong resident of the community who died in her home her Friday, August 17. Mrs. Hatz was 73 years old. She had been an invalid the past four years.

The Requiem High Mass was sung by the pastor, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Frank Schultes.

Mrs. Hatz had been hospitalized several times since her health began to fail but during the past year was confined and under medical care in her home where she had the loving care of her daughter Kathleen, with whom she shared the family home.

BORN ON FARM HERE
Born April 5, 1883, on a farm west of Remsen, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Margaret [Homan] Arens, early settlers in this community. Her father took an active interest in county politics and for years was a member of the board of supervisors.

The Arens family later moved east of Remsen when Mr. Arens bought the present Gralapp place where they lived until the parents retired to Remsen.

MARRIED IN 1909

She married Nicholas Hatz February 16, 1909 and the couple continued to reside here. Mr. Hatz, prominent business man and real estate dealer for years, member of the town council and at the time of his death October 16, 1954, was member of the Municipal Utilities board of trustees in charge of the electric and water department. He held this position from the time of it inception in 1933.

Mrs. Hatz was one of the community's outstanding women, utterly devoted to her family, kind and helpful where she could be to her many friends and thoroughly devote in her membership on the Catholic faith to which she adhered steadfastly throughout her life. During her long and fatal illness she was given every comfort not only by her family but as well from many of those with whom she had associated through many years of residence in this community.
She was a longtime member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Christian Mothers society.

SURVIVORS

Survivors include three children, two sisters, and one brother.

Children are: Mrs. J. W. (Margaret) Zimmerman and Miss Kathleen, both of Remsen, and Vernon Hatz of Alton. The sisters are Miss Margaret Arens, Remsen; and Mrs. Nick (Cecelia) Gengler, Elkton, S. D.; the brother is Joseph Arens of Dumont, Minn.

Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were three brothers, John, Nick and James Arens; a sister Susan; and a daughter, Milfred, who died in infancy.

SERVICES

The wake Saturday and Sunday was held at the Fisch funeral home which had charge of funeral arrangements and direction. Members of the Christian Mothers and C. D. A. recited the rosary both evenings.

Pallbearers were Joseph Elving, Joseph Bohnenkamp, Joseph Lampert and John Schiltz. Interment was in St. Mary's parish cemetery.
