Richard F. (Dick) Nitzschke, 78, of Remsen died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Richard F Nitzschke was born Feb 25, = 1924, at Remsen, the son of Otto H. and Eda (Scott) Nitzschke Dick was raised in Remsen and received his education at the Remsen Public School from which he graduated in 1941. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on Feb 11, 1948 at the age of 17 and served during World War II as a technician in fifth grade in British Columbia where he perfected his welding skills. He was discharged on Dec. 15, 1945. He returned to Remsen and drove a gas truck for Standard Oil until 1951 During 1951, he built the Remsen Blacksmith and Welding Shop which he operated for nearly 50 years.

He married Sally Vaske on May 12, 1951, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen where they made their home. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. He served on the Remsen City Council from 1974 to 1982. He was a volunteer fireman in Remsen from 1953 to 1973, serving several years as fire chief. In the late 1960s, he was instrumental in purchasing and operating the first volunteer emergency ambulance in Remsen. He was past commander and a current member of V.F.W. post 3328. He was a charter member of the V.F.W. Post 3328 and American Legion Post 220 Color Guard.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and playing with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Sally of Remsen; one son, Rick of Remsen; five daughters and their husbands, Donna and Randy Anthony of Des Moines, Ann and Mel Lenox of Fort Dodge, Carol and Alan Henrich of Omaha, Neb., Sharon and John Bergeson of Beaumont, Texas, Judy and Wayne Behrens of Kingsley; seven grandchildren, Amy, Nick and Jon Lenox, Mike and Mark Anthony, Mallory and Kelsey Behrens; three brothers and their wives, Warren and Marie of Waterloo, Andy and DeLoris of Lawton, and Lynn and Patty of Springfield, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three children 1 in infancy.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Thomas Hart and Msgr. Nicholas J. Ruba officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Remsen, with graveside military services conducted by Post 3328 V.F.W. and Post 220 American Legion. Friends may call any time after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Casket bearers will be Larry Bortscheller, LeRoy Fuerstenberg, Brett Nitzschke, Jeff Nitzschke, Stuart Nitzschke, and Jerry Vaske.
