ERNEST W. HAUSWALD WAS MERRILL NATIVE –
RITES IN MINNESOTA.

MERRILL Special – Ernest W. Hauswald, 70, of Battle Lake, Minn., died Sept 23 at the Fargo, N.D. Veterans Hospital after a long illness. He was a native of Merrill.

Attending burial services last Friday at Worthington, Minn., were Mr. and Mrs. L. N. Hauser of Merrill and daughter Mrs. Wallace Hemphill of LeMars. Mr. Hauser and Mr. Hauswald were cousins.

Funeral services were held at the Battle Lake First Baptist Church Thursday, Sept. 26. Masonic rites were conducted the previous evening at Gearhart’s funeral chapel there by Cornerstone Lodge, No. 99 A.F.&A.M., Fergus Falls.

The chapel service Friday at Worthington was conducted by the Worthington American Legion. Burial was in the Worthington city cemetery.

Mr. Hauswald was born Feb. 13, 1893, on the Johnston township farm near Merrill homesteaded in the 1870s by his grandfather, August Hauswald. When he was a child the family moved to San Bernadino, Calif., later returning to Merrill where he grew to manhood.

Mr. Hauswald attended Morningside college, Sioux City. He was employed by the Metz Baking Co. for 25 years, 13 at Sioux City and 12 as manager of the Sioux Falls plant.

He was married in 1942 to Edith Cramer. The couple lived at Sioux Falls until 1948 when they moved to Battle Lake where they owned and operated Hauswald’s lodge for nine years. They retired in 1957, but continued to make their home on Otter Tail Lake.

Mr. Hauswald was a veteran of World War I, Barracks No. 922 of Fergus Falls, Battle Lake lodge, El Riad temple at Sioux Falls.

He is survived by his wife; his mother, Mrs. Melissa Jane Hauswald of Anaheim, Calif.; a son and daughter, Frank and Mrs. Wayne Frankman, both of Sioux Falls; three sisters, Mrs. E. C. Beckley of Pamona, Calif., Mrs. A. E. McCarthy and Mrs. Viola Knapp, both of Anaheim, Calif., and 18 grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. McCarthy attended the funeral services.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.
