Carola began working for Westmar College as a housekeeping supervisor following the death of her husband. Most recently, she was employed with Area Education Agency 12 in Le Mars.

Carola was a member of St. James Catholic Church and the St. James Alter Society. She enjoyed reading and listening to music as well as playing the piano and the accordion. Carola never lost touch with her heritage; she enjoyed keeping in contact with relatives and friends in Germany and looked forward to traveling to see them. She had many friends and loved spending time with them and her family. Her grandchildren were especially dear to her.
