Dale Luze, 65, of rural Merrill, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a brief illness.
Dale Henry Luze was born July 19, 1938, on a farm near White, S.D., the son of Frank and Minnie (Rost) Luze. He graduated from White High School in 1956. Dale enlisted in the United States Army on Aug. 21, 1956. He attained the rank of E-5 prior to his honorable discharge on May 21, 1959. He returned to White to farm with his father.
On March 27, 1960, Dale married Eleanor Frances Rossman. He worked for the United States Department of Agriculture while living in South Dakota. In September 1965 the family moved to the Merrill area. He was employed with Dubuque Meat Packing in Le Mars for 20 years before it closed in 1991. Dale then started his own business in lawn care and snow removal. For the past eight years he has worked as the custodian at Kissinger Elementary School in Merrill.
Dale was a member of the Merrill First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed watching football, fishing and tinkering with his model trains. For many years he was very involved with his four sons in Boy Scouts.
Survivors include his wife Eleanor of rural Merrill; five children and their spouses, Michel and Kendra Luze of Aplington, Debra and Steve Carlson of Alta, Craig and Nancy Luze of Omaha, Neb., Richard and Kim Luze of Lawton, and Pat and Lori Luze of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren Travis Luze, Robbie, Stephanie and Jennifer Carlson, Larry and Valerie Leigh, Austin and Spencor Luze, Tyler and Alex Luze; a sister, Darlene Koellner of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Hans Koellner.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Merrill. The Rev. Benjamin Meeks and the Rev. Charles Tefft will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Merrill. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present to greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service.
Pallbearers will be Edward Richardson, Vernon Harrington, Clark Tindall, Clark Schmitz, Ivan Trometer and Clint Leonard.
