Mrs. McDougall Early Settler Taken By Death

Was Resident Of Plymouth County For Sixty-Two Years

Mrs. Martha McDougall, 92, resident of Plymouth county for sixty-two years, died at her home, Monday night from pneumonia after ten days illness. Mrs. McDougall enjoyed excellent health during a long and active life, until the past year or two when weight of years began to take its toll.

Martha Ann Warren was born in Cambridgeshire, England, August 15, 1850, where she grew to womanhood. With her parents, Mr and Mrs. Joseph Warren, and a large family of brothers and sisters, she came to LeMars in 1880, when several hundred Britishers swarmed into Northwestern Iowa in search of land and homes.

On arriving in Plymouth county, her father, Joeph Warren, was chief herdsman of the imported sheep flocks on the Close Bros. ranch on the West Fork where subsequently the towns of Quorn and Kingsley grew into existence. The senior Warren latter farmed north of LeMars and then moved to the vicinity of Westfield.

Martha Ann Warren was married to James N. McDougall came to LeMars in 1870 and took up land in Grant township and began farming, prospering and acquiring more land. He was a successful farmer ans was ably assisted in the care of the farm by his wife. Mrs. McDougall was hardworking and industrious and provided an excellent home for her husband and children and attended to multifarious tasks. After living more than forty years on the farm they came to LeMars to live and established a pleasant home.

Mrs. McDougall leaves to mourn her death her sons; and daughters, who are: Edward J. McDougall of Westfield; Miss Mary McDougall at home; Mrs. Frank Glaser of LeMars; Mrs. Henry Barkl of Sioux City; John J. McDougall of Struble; Chester N. McDougall of LeMars, twenty grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Thomas of Long Beach, Cal.; John Warren of Atchinson, Kansas; Jonas Warren of Elk Point, S. D.; George Warren of Sioux City; Mrs. Alex Thompson of Gary, S. D., and Mrs. Sarah Hinchcliff of Park Rapids, Minn.

Mr. McDougall died in July, 1922, and a daughter Mrs. LeRoy Edwards and two infant daughters preceded her in death.

Mrs. McDougall had a wide acquaintance in the county where she lived for more than three score years and enjoyed many friendships. She was a member of the Methodist church and a member of the Happy Hour club.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at the First Methodist church. Rev. W. M. Hubbard conducted the service. Interment was made in the city cemetery. The Mauer funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
