Leona Sitzmann, 93, of Le Mars, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at Good Samaritan Village, Brentwood Center, in Le Mars.
The former Leona Susan Nuebel was born June 19, 1911, just south of Le Mars in America Township, the daughter of Frank and Josephine (Meis) Nuebel. She grew up in the Le Mars area and attended St. Joseph's Parochial School in Le Mars. On Feb. 21, 1933, Leona married Raymond J. Sitzmann at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. Following their marriage the couple farmed south of Le Mars in Stanton Township near Neptune for many years. Her husband Ray died Feb. 27, 1956. With the help of her family, Leona was able to keep the farm going and continued to live on the farm until 1974, when she moved into Le Mars.
Leona was a very faithful woman and enjoyed going to church. She also enjoyed playing cards. Family was very important to her and she loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Survivors include eight children and their spouses, Gerald and Dolores Sitzmann of Hinton, Jeannette and Mark Schroeder of Le Mars, Cletus and Sharon Sitzmann of Kingsley, Mary Ann and Don Krogman of Alton, Kathleen and Bob Shaw of Spirit Lake, Fred and Susie Sitzmann of Rochester, Minn., Steve and Kathy Sitzmann of Le Mars, and Kevin and JoAnn Sitzmann of Le Mars; 39 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Rosella Sitzmann of Le Mars, Vivian Sitzmann of Sioux City, Aggie Sitzmann of Le Mars, and Dorothy Crooks of Garden Grove, Calif.; a brother Vincent Nuebel and his wife Alvina of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ray in 1956; a son, Leon Sitzmann in 1995; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Sitzmann; three grandchildren: Hud Shaw, Angela Shaw, and Joe Sitzmann; two great-grandchildren, Blake Sitzmann and Robert Schroeder; two sisters, Bernice in infancy, and Mary (Harpenau) Bohlke; and two brothers, Leo Nuebel and Lawrence Nuebel.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges and the Rev. Eugene Sitzmann concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery-Neptune, in Lincoln Township.
Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Friday) at St. Joseph's Catholic Church-Neptune, with a combined rosary at 4 p.m. by the Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters, and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be for one hour prior to the Mass on Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars.
The Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars is in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers will be eight grandsons: Duane Sitzmann, Dean Schroeder, Glenn Krogman, Jeff Shaw, Adam Sitzmann, Alex Sitzmann, Chris Sitzmann, and Nathan Sitzmann.
