Warren B. Hauff, 93, of Merrill, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
Warren Breitwieser Hauff was born June 28, 1911 at Merrill, the son of Conrad and Claudia (Crouch) Hauff. Warren graduated from Merrill High School in 1929. Following high school, Warren attended the University of South Dakota where he belonged to Tri-Delta Fraternity. He later continued his studies at Morningside College in Sioux City.

Warren was united in marriage to Elizabeth Rhea on Oct. 5, 1937, at Dakota City, Neb. Warren and Elizabeth lived in Des Moines when Warren worked in sales for Spaulding Sporting Goods and later lived in the Dallas, Texas, area when Warren worked for Rolfe Leather Goods. During World War II, Warren worked as a fireman at the air base in Sioux City.

Following the war, Warren and Elizabeth settled in Merrill where he worked with his father at Hauff Hardware Store. Warren operated the hardware store until his retirement in 1998.

He enjoyed golfing on many of the areas golf courses. Golfing was his passion and enjoyed every opportunity to play a round of golf with his friends.

He was a 50-year member of the Floyd Masonic Lodge in Orange City (formerly the Giblem Lodge in Le Mars) and the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, and a 50-year member of the Sioux City Scottish Rite.

During the years Merrill had its own incorporated school district, Warren served on the school board and was a past president of that school board.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth of Merrill; a daughter, Sara Jane Hauff of Merrill and her husband, Ronald Osborne of Waterloo; a son, Timothy Hauff of Bangkok, Thailand; six grandchildren: Julianne, her husband, Charles Gannon and their children Adam, Noah, and Rachel; Matthew and his wife, Jean Bobier; Rebekah her husband, Gary Adams and their children Sarah and Gretchen; Shelly her husband, Shannon Batman, and their children Blake and Madilyn; Tanwa Hauff and Tana Hauff; a brother, Dwight Hauff of Sioux City; several nieces and nephews plus many friends.

Warren was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David Hauff; a daughter, Gretchen Hauff; and a sister, Viola Todd.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Merrill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Benjamin Meeks officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will from 4 to 7 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation at the church will continue at 1 p.m. Wednesday until service time.

Pallbearers will be Ken Richards, Stan Willer, Lowell Klemme, Paul LaBahn, Rick Lindsey, and Clark Schmitz. Honorary pallbearers will be Floyd Powell, Julie Bergquist, Dale Luther, Larry Molzen, and Rosie Nipp.

Memorials maybe directed to the Merrill High School Alumni Scholarship Fund at Prairie State Bank in Merrill.
