RESIDENT HERE SINCE SIXTIES — Arthur Reeves Was Early Settler in the Vicinity of Seney — STALWART PIONEER — Came to Plymouth County Before Advent of Railroad

Death claimed Arthur Reeves, stalwart pioneer of Plymouth county, prominent farmer and admirable citizen, at the Methodist hospital in Sioux City Sunday night [January 31, 1932] following a lingering illness principally due to the inroads of old age sapping the strength of a virile constitution remarkable through a long life for ruggedness.

The death of Arthur Reeves removes another personality bound up in the progress of western environment and one which helped the development of Plymouth county.

Arthur Reeves was a native of England and inherited many of the characteristic traits of the yeoman class heralded in its day for its stand against feudalism and dominating aristocracy. Mr. Reeves was hearty, bluff, downright and outspoken at the same time deferring, with a friendly spirit, to those who differed in view. He was one of nature's noblemen, a good honest forth right citizen, friendly, neighborly and a devote husband and father and enjoyed the respect of all who know him.

Came Here When Child — Arthur Reeves was born in the county of Kent, England, on March 21, 1847 [actually March 23, 1847 in Sandhurst, Kent, England]. When he was a boy of five years old [actually 1853] his parents, seeking fortune in a new land, came to America and located in the state of New York. Coming west the family engaged in farming in Kane county, Illinois, in the sixties [until 1868].

Arthur Reeves, seeking adventure and betterment for himself, came to northwest Iowa in 1868, when homesteads were to be obtained for the asking from a beneficent government.

Locates in Elgin — Mr. Reeves came to Le Mars in 1868 and took up land in the vicinity of Seney, where he has lived ever since, following the pursuit of farming and raising live stock. Of late years he lived in retirement.

Mr. Reeves was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Eason [actually Mrs. Elizabeth Eason, a young widow, whose maiden name is Mercer] September 2, 1872 [actually Sept. 3, 1872]. He is survived by his wife and children who are Mrs. Geo. Hughes [actually his step-daughter], of Haxtun, Colo; Mrs. C. W. Cooke [actually Cook], Will, Bert and Clarence Reeves, Mrs. Frank Becker, of Elgin township, and Mrs. Robert Chambers, of Thurman [actually Thomas], S. D. He also leaves a large number of grandchildren and descendants. A sister, Mrs. Daniel [actually John] Trigg, resides at Pipestone, Minn., and a brother, John Reeves, lives in Le Mars.

The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Reeves home. Rev. W. G. Bergman, pastor of the Seney church, assisted by Rev. M. [Marion] L. Metcalf, of Sioux City, will conduct the last rites. Interment will be made in the cemetery at Seney.
