March 3, 1927WALT SCOTT DIES IN HOSPITAL.
Walt Scott, a well known resident of this city for the past thirty-five years, passed away Monday, February 28, 1927, at 11:45 p.m. in the State Hospital at Cherokee, Iowa, where he was taken for treatment on the Monday previous. He had been in failing health for some time and his mind became somewhat affected. His death was the result of general paralysis. He would have been 65 years old on the 24th of this month.None of his relatives are now living here and from the best information that can be obtained, Mr. Scott was born in the state of Connecticut, and when a boy came west with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Scott. Some time in the 80s, his father took a homestead southwest of here in Union county, S.D., and the family lived there a number of years before coming to Akron. His father died here fifteen or eighteen years ago. Walter Scott’s first marriage was to Mary Page in Elk Point, S.D. His second marriage was to Louise Claborn, of Seney, Plymouth county, Iowa, in the spring of 1890. They moved to Akron in 1893 and this has since remained the family home. Four children were born to this union, two daughters, Carrie, who died a number of years ago, and Dorothy (Mrs. Ed. Shoberg), and two sons, Grover and Lee. A daughter, by his first marriage, Mrs. Ethel Belcher of Sioux City died a few years ago. His second wife here January 9, 1924. Mr. Scott received a good education in his youth. He followed the trade of a plasterer and mason during all his residence in Akron and was regarded a fine workman. This man’s life and character might be used as a moral subject for a sermon, but it is generally admitted he was his own worst enemy and that he possessed many redeeming qualities.
The remains arrived here from Cherokee Wednesday morning and are being held at Klauer Bros.’ undertaking parlors pending word from the surviving three children. News of his death was broadcast from the Minneapolis radio station, WCCO, a couple of nights this week. The last heard of the children, Grover was in Denver, Lee in Texas and Mrs. Dorothy Shoberg in St. Paul. If it is impossible to communicate with any of them, it is likely the funeral and interment will take place here Saturday of this week.
