ONNO ONKEN DEAD AT AGE 87; RITES HELD HERE MONDAY

Was Resident of County 78 Years

Onno Onken, 87, a Plymouth county resident since 1884, died Friday, Sept. 21, at St. Joseph Mercy hospital, Sioux City hospital, Sioux City, after failing health for several years. He was injured in a fall a week previously and had a week previously and had been hospitalized two days.

A retired farmer, he had resided at 408 2nd Ave. NW.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John American Lutheran church, with Rev. L. L. Belk and Rev. Robert Floy officiating. Burial was in Christ Lutheran cemetery, Grant township, under direction of Mauer’s funeral home.

Mr. Onken was born July 11, 1875, at Dixon, Ill., the son of John D. and Henrietta Dirks Onken. He married Augusta Martfeld Aug. 22, 1901, in Johnson township near Merrill. She died in 1940.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. John (Katherine) Hauschild and Henrietta Onken, both of Le Mars, and Mrs. Charles (Anna) Kluver of Merrill; two sons, John and Onno Jr., both of Le Mars; two grandchildren; three great-children; a brother and sister, Fred Onken and Mrs. Bertha Scheonrock, both of LeMars.

He was preceded in death by a son, Fred D. Onken, who died in 1960, a brother and two sisters.
