Harry Nannen dies in tractor mishap

Harry Nannen, 57, Ireton farmer, was killed about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when the tractor he was driving on a blacktop road near his home, overturned on him in deep ditch.

The accident happened 10 miles west and 5 miles and 5 miles north of Le-Mars in Preston township, Plymouth county.

Witnesses said Mr. Nannen had been headed east on a gravel road and had approached the blacktop. He stopped at the stop sign and proceeded onto the blacktop, turning north toward his home.

After going only a few hundred feet, he met a car and the driver reported to authorities that the John Deer 630 tractor equipped with a front scoop seemed to be swerving on the highway.

Skid marks on the highway show that Mr. Nannen applied the brakes before tipping over in the east ditch crushing him beneath a wheel and the tractor seat.

Plymouth county medical examiner, Dr. Sherman Lindell said the cause of death was a fractured neck and crushed chest.

Investigating officers were Deputy Sheriff Ed. Guntren and Highway Patrolmen Dave Hays and Richard Helmers.

Luken’s ambulance was called and the body was brought to Mauer funeral home here.

A half-brother, Walter Nannen 53, rural Akron, died unexpectedly Oct. 30 at his home following a heart attack.

Mr. Nannen was born July 15, 1909, in Preston township and was a lifelong resident of that township in Plymouth county. His parents were the late Henry A. and Maria (Frerichs) Nannen.

He was married Mar. 24, 1937, at Akron to Elvina Jurgensen.

Funeral services are tentatively set for 2 p.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran church, Preston township, Rev. James Sandvick will officiate. Place of interment will be announced later.

Survivors are his wife, Elvina of rural Ireton; a son, Arlen, a daughter, Marlys, both at home, and three sisters, Mrs. Katherine Hillrichs, Mrs. Johanna Andresen and Mrs. Marie Beeck, all of Le Mars.
