WELL-KNOWN AKRON MAN IIS SUMMONED BY DEATH FRIDAY
Rites Held Monday Afternoon For Henry Hillrichs, Sr.
Henry Hillrichs, Sr., for many years one of the prominent farmers of northwest Plymouth county, passes away at his home in Akron last Friday morning, October 7, 1949, at 8:11 o’clock, at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 3 days. He had been in failing health during the past two years, but only for the last month was he bedfast.
Mr. Hillrichs was born January 4, 1865, at Felsum, Oestriesland, Germany, where he was baptized in the Lutheran faith. In his youth he was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Felsum. In 1884 he came to America and settled at Pana, Illinois. He worked there and at Springfield, Illinois. In 1891 he was united in marriage with Mena Theen Schmidt at Springfield, and they resided two years at Athens, Illinois, before coming to Iowa and settling near Le Mars, Plymouth county. One year later they moved to a farm in Portland township.
The next move took them to their newly purchased farm in Preston township, where the couple lived for the next forty-one years. During this time they were active members of the Preston Township Lutheran church. After this active life, they retired and made their home in Akron. This happy union was blessed with twelve children.
Mr. Hillrichs was preceded in death by two children who died in infancy; one son, Reinhard, who died in World War I; his wife, who passed away in 1941; one sister and two brothers and his son, Edwin, who passed away here suddenly about three weeks ago.
He leaves to mourn his passing, five sons, Henry, Jr., John, Fred, Ben and Harry; three daughters, Mrs. W. Barnisky, Mrs. Andrew Andresen, and Mrs. John Peters, all of Akron vicinity; one sister, Mrs. Anna Bruns; 23 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a host of friends and acquaintances, by whom he was highly esteemed.
Funeral services were held Monday, at 1:15 p.m. at his home here and at 2:00 p.m. in the St. John’s Lutheran church in Preston township, conducted by Rev. H.F. Stief. A quartet, composed of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Haage, Helen Popken and Norman Klemme, sang “Have Thine Own Way, Lord,” and “Safe in the Arms of Jesus.” Pallbearers were his five remaining sons and one grandson. Interment was in the church cemetery.
