Henry Roscoe Newman, 86, died May 31 in an Akron hospital of a long illness.
Services were at 2 p.m. June 3 in the Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron. The Rev. Sherman Tidball of the Westfield Congregational Church officiated. Burial was in the Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. A prayer service was held at 7:30 p.m. June 2 in the funeral home.
Mr. Newman was born July 8, 1889 in Greenville, Ky. He married Lavina Morehead on May 23, 1939. He was a crane operator with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and also farmed in the Westfield area before retiring to Westfield in 1962. He was a member of the Hoschler American Legion Post of Akron and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a World War I veteran.
Survivors include the widow; three sons, Lendol of Korea, Losen of Dakota City, Iowa, and Donald of Port Angeles, Wash.; a stepson, Lowell Morehead of Westfield; a step-daughter, Mrs. John (Ardis) Peters of Westfield; three brothers, Slayton of Mountain Home, Ark., and Charles and Howard of Hawarden; three sisters, Mrs. Lennie Locke of Beaver Dam, Ky., Mrs. Grace Childers of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Geneva Jeffries of Elk Point, S.D.; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
