Nick Wellong Is Dead
Was Proprietor of the Le Mars Bottling Works
He Had been Sick For Many Months
The Deceased was a Native of Luxembourg and Came Here When a Youth and Later Conducted the Old Western HouseNicholas Wellong, a resident of Plymouth County for the past twenty-two years, died at his home, 120 Fourth Avenue N. E. yesterday morning at six o'clock following a long illness. He had been ill with dropsy and complications for the past few months and the end was not unexpected.
Nicholas Wellong was a native of the Grand Duchy, of Luxembourg, Europe, and was born at Bettinger on June 9, 1879, where he grew to manhood and learned the confectionery trade. He came to this country in 1901 and worked for a while on a farm for the late Mathias Wurth. He then came to Le Mars where he made his home since and worked at the hotel business in the Dubuque and Western Houses, which have gone out of existence. Mr. Wellong conducted the Western House hotel for some years and then engaged in the manufacture of pop, soda and, mineral waters, establishing the LeMars Bottling Works which he directed until his last illness.
About fifteen years ago he was united in marriage with Miss Katharine Burkhardt, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederic Burkhardt of this city. He is survived by his wife and two children, aged 13 and 6 years old A brother John Wellong, lives at Struble and a brother and two sisters live in Luxembourg, Europe. Mr. Wellong was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks, and the Eagles.
Mr. Wellong was a good citizen, active in business and popular with a large number of acquaintances.
The funeral services will be held on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at St Joseph's church and the interment made in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
