CHAS. M. ALLEN IS CALLED BY DEATH FRIDAY, FEB. 27

Rites Are Held Here Tuesday For Esteemed Former Akron Man

Heard with much regret here was news of the death of Charles M. Allen last Friday, February 27, at a hospital in Saginaw, Mich., after a brief illness, at the age of 83 years, 10 months, and 10 days.

Mr. Allen was for more than fifty years prominently identified with the commercial interests of Akron community, serving as an employee and manager for the telephone company. Starting with the early inception of the Akron Telephone Co., under the proprietorship of the late E. F. Cobb, he later entered the employ of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., here, serving until his retirement several years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen have made their home the past two years in Saginaw, Mich., where one of their daughters resided.

Mr. Allen’s body was brought to Akron Thursday morning and funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. at the Lewison Funeral Chapel, Rev. Robert Schesvold, pastor of the First Baptist church, and Rev. Dan Peterson, of Herman, Nebr., a former local pastor, officiating. Acting as pallbearers were V. G. Adams, H.B. Nelson, Frank Jacobs, Otto Larsen, Joe Johnson and Orlan Moore. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery. Marvin Klemme, as Worshipful, conducted the Masonic burial rites for Freedom Lodge, No. 434, of which the deceased was a member for many years and a Past Master.

Accompanying the body here from Saginaw was a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William Stoner.

Esteemed Former Akron Man Was a Prominent In Community Affairs

Mention was made in these columns last week of the death of a former widely known and highly esteemed resident of Akron, Charles M. Allen, of Saginaw, Mich., on February 27, 1959, aged 83 years, 10 months, and 10 days.

Mr. Allen was born April 17, 1875, at Glen Easton, West Virginia, where he spent his youth. Coming to Akron when a young man, he took employment as a lineman for the local telephone exchange, which was beginning to expand into the surrounding territory under the aggressive proprietorship of E. F. Cobb. He continued as an employee of the old Akron Telephone Co. for a number of years and continued with the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for a number of years and continued with the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., when it took over the business here, eventually becoming local manager for the company and continuing until his retirement in 1941, after about twenty-nine years of service. He was a member of the Pioneers, a 20-year group of Bell company employees. Mr. Alen was noted for his untiring attention to his duties often times most arduous, and courtesy to company patrons under all conditions.

On June 27, 1906, he was united in marriage with Miss Florence Luella Kenaston, of Akron and their union was blessed with one son and two daughters. Akron remained their home for more than fifty years. Mr. and Mrs. Allen were privileged to happily observe their golden wedding anniversary in the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William Stoner, in Saginaw, Mich., June 27, 1956.

Mr. Allen was for many years a member of Freedom Lodge, No. 434, A.F. & A.M., and at one time served as Worshipful Master. He was a member of the Akron board of education for a number of years and always took an active interest in community affairs. He will long be remembered for the valued services rendered this community, as well as for his kind and pleasant personality.

Surviving are his wife, Luella; a son, Dr. C. V. Allen, of Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Mrs. William (Hazel) Stoner, of Saginaw, Mich., and Mrs. Frank (Frances) Sullivan, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a brother, Frank, of West Virginia; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held in Saginaw, Mich., before the body was brought to Akron on Tuesday morning of last week. As mentioned in these columns last week, a funeral service was held in the Lewison Funeral Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Rev. Dan Peterson, of Herman, Nebr., a former pastor here officiating. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery under Masonic burial rites.

Several representatives of the Sioux City District office of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., and other friends from Sioux City and Hawarden attended the services.
