William "Bill" Vanderham, 93, of Elk Point, South Dakota, formerly of Akron and Sioux City, Iowa passed away Monday, November 9, 2015 at Prairie Estates Care Center in Elk Point.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 13, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Akron. Pastor Jesse Hailey will officiate. Burial with military honors conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, 2015 with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron. William Henry Vanderham was born September 29, 1922 in Lynch, North Dakota, the son of David and Anna (Stallbaum) Vanderham. At the age of 2, he moved with his family to a farm near Chatsworth, Iowa where he attended country school. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army. Following basic training stateside, he served his country during WWII. He was stationed in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1946. While in the service, he was united in marriage to Merion Newman on October 29, 1943 in Sioux City, Iowa. Following his service, they lived in Chatsworth. Early on, he drove truck until they began farming in South Dakota and later in Iowa for nearly 20 years. After retiring from farming, he went to work Armour Packing House in Sioux City for a short time. He and Merion also owned and operated a bar and grill, "Little Nashville" in Chatsworth. Later on, Bill went to work for LG Everist, working in Merrill, Akron, and Sioux City as a loader operator for 25 years. In 1987, they moved to Sioux City. In 2013, they moved to Elk Point. Bill was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hawarden, Iowa for many years. He also was a longtime member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron. Through the years, Bill enjoyed listening to country music, attending jamborees, and dancing.

Survivors include his wife of over 72 years, Merion of Elk Point, SD; his children: Darold (Paulette) Vanderham of Alcester, SD, Sandy (Tim) Caskey of Sioux City, IA, and Debbie (Chuck) Veldhuizen of Sioux City, IA; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Jerry Vanderham and Danny Vanderham; two brothers: Fred "Fritz" and Herman; six sisters: Katie Kalke, Minnie Haage, Lena Weyen, Marie Place, Annie Huebner, and Rose Huebner; and three siblings in infancy.
