Obituary for Mary C. Masuen

Mary Masuen, 85, of Le Mars, Iowa died Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with Father Bruce Lawler officiating. Burial will be in St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Oyens, IA. Visitation with family present will be AT THE CHURCH from 5-7pm on Friday. There will be a vigil prayer service at 7p.m., followed by a rosary. Services have been entrusted to the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument of Remsen.

Mary was born on October 26, 1931, to Henry and Catherine (Colling) Haverkamp of Remsen, IA. She graduated from Remsen St. Mary’s High School in 1949. Mary graduated from St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in Sioux City in 1952 and worked as an RN at the former Sacred Heart Hospital Hospital in LeMars.

On May 21, 1955, she married Vincent Masuen and they made their home on the Masuen family farm near Oyens. They were members of St. Catherine’s parish of Oyens and raised seven children on the farm. In addition to raising her family and helping on the farm, Mary was active in 4-H and was the leader of the Marionettes 4-H club. In 2000, Vincent and Mary retired from the farm and moved into LeMars. They joined St. James parish, and Mary was a member of the Christian Mother’s Society. Vincent and Mary celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in May 2017.

Mary was an accomplished seamstress, sewing Easter and Christmas dresses for the girls. She made the best chicken dressing and homemade pies. She was the rock of the family, organizing many family get-togethers and meals. Her children credit her with their sewing, cooking, and refinishing skills.

Family includes four generations of twins-Mary’s twin aunts, Philomena and Josephine, Mary and her twin sister Martha, twin daughters Denise and Donna, and twin grandchildren Jack and Kennedi (Doug’s) and Drew and Ava (Denise’s).

Surviving Mary is her husband Vincent, residing at Happy Siesta in Remsen; children: Ann Kaup of St. Louis, MO, Judy (Andre) Limoges of Sioux City, Linda (Mike) Schroeder of Urbandale, Pat (Scott) Hansen of Yankton, SD, Denise Roemen of West Des Moines, Donna (Dan) Geier of Urbandale, and Doug (Sue) on the family farm; her twin sister Martha Haverkamp of Remsen, and brother Clarence Haverkamp of Iowa City; 15 grandchildren: Aaron (Nicole) Limoges, Daniel (Kristina) Limoges, Leann (Nate) Pederson, Patrick Schroeder, Rachel (Kevin) Frommelt, Emily (Matt) Rohmiller, Jordan Hansen, Maken, Jack and Kennedi Masuen, Alex and Will Geier, Julia, Ava and Drew Roemen; three great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by infant son Anthony Mark; her parents; in-laws, Clem and Josephine Masuen; her sister Helen and husband Bob Nelson; sisters-in-law Dorothy Haverkamp, Helen Hentges Haverkamp, Marie and husband Joe Heurtz, Margaret and husband Myron Evans, Celeste and husband Roy Smith, Catherine and husband Arnold Evans, Zita Masuen, and infant brother-in-law Eugene Masuen.
