Ruth Wales, 84, of Akron, Iowa passed away Friday, December 12, 2014 at the Akron Care Center in Akron.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 18, 2014 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. Reverend Don Nelson will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2014, with the family present after 5:30 p.m., and an Order of Eastern Star Service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Ruth Mary Koch was born September 6, 1930 in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Herman and Elsie (Williams) Koch. She attended Breezy Hill Country school and later graduated from Akron High School. She attended Iowa State University. While at college, she met her future husband, Ken Wales. She and Ken were united in marriage on May 16, 1952 at Plymouth Presbyterian Church, rural Le Mars, Iowa.

Early on, they made their home in Pleasantville, Iowa, until Ken joined the service. Ruth moved with Ken until his discharge, when they returned to Pleasantville. In 1957, they moved to her parent’s farm east of Akron, the farm has been in the Williams family since 1884. They farmed and raised cattle for over 50 years. In 2010, they moved into Akron.

Ruth was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She served as secretary for the O.E.S. Vesper Chapter #61 in Akron for many years. Later, she was a member of the O.E.S. Silver-Azure Chapter #548 in Sioux City. She was also a member of P.E.O. Ruth also served as a 4-H leader for many years. Through the years, Ruth enjoyed gardening and cross stitching. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren. She was always there for them whenever they needed anything. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband of over 62 years, Ken of Akron; a son: Richard (Nancy) Wales of Rochester, MN; a daughter: Nancy (Kurt) Appley of Akron, IA; her grandchildren: Jen (Chad) Siemering, Jayne (Tommy) Balicky, Joe (Morgan) Appley, Alicia Wales, and Marissa Wales; her sisters in law: Letha (Darrel) Brinkman, Ila Josephs, and Charlotte Koch; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother: Don Koch; and two sisters in infancy.
