REMSEN, Iowa - Martin W. Pottebaum, 88, of Remsen died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with Monsignor Nicholas J. Ruba and the Revs. Thomas J. Hart and Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Mr. Pottebaum was born Nov. 19, 1910, in rural Alton, Iowa, the son of Bernard and Catherine (Friedmann) Pottebaum. He was raised in the Alton area and attended St. Mary's Acadeny in Alton. He was employed as a farm laborer in the Remsen area.

He married Evelyn Galles on Jan. 3, 1934, in Granville, Iowa. The couple made their home near Remsen, where he was employed in trucking. In 1937, he began farming near Remsen. They moved to Sioux City in January 1955, where they operated a coin-operated laundry for four years. He was then an insurance agent for Knights of Columbus and Life Investors for seven years. He then operated Martin's Appliance Repair Service until retiring. They moved back to Remsen in 1990. He entered Happy Siesta Health Care Center in 1994.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, where he was a past Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator, state historian, and in 1976 was Iowa State Knight of the Year. He was a past member of Cathedral Church in Sioux City, where he was a lector and eucharistic minister.

Survivors include his wife; eight daughters, Shirley and her husband, Joe Stoll, of Primghar, Iowa, Darlene and her husband, John Dickes, Doris and her husband, Ron Gettner, and Janice McGinnis, all of Sioux City, Clarice and her husband, Daniel Groff, Betty and her husband, Ron Heidesch, and Julie Pottebaum, all of Remsen, and Joyce and her husband, Mike Sunclades, of Bellevue, Neb.; six sons and their wives, Cyril and Leslie of Arvada, Colo., Ron and Judy of Pierson, Iowa, Ken and Lisa of Jefferson, S.D., Mike and Pam and Marty and Kandy, all of Sioux City, and Mark and Lynda of Bronson, Iowa; 54 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Marian Pottebaum of Marcus, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Suzanne; a grandson, Mike Stoll; a granddaughter, Brenda Sunclades; seven brothers, Frank, John, William, Anton, Aloysius, Leo and Henry; and five sisters, Anna Streff, Theresa - Mother Leola, Mary Portz, Rose Minten and Hilda Haupert.

Pallbearers will be Cyril, Ron, Ken, Mike, Marty and Mark Pottebaum.
