FATAL FALL FROM A WAGON

Joe Hodge, of this city, met instant death Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock in a fall from the seat of a triple-box wagon at the John Koch farm, east of town.

Mr. Hodge was hauling hogs to market here for his employer and had just returned from a trip to town, when in backing up to the chute for another load, the rear wheels of the wagon suddenly settled into a shallow trench. The jolt threw Mr. Hodge from his high much force and in such manner as to break his neck and death was practically instantaneous.

Mr. Hodge was alone at the time, but the accident was seen by persons at the house. Herman Koch ran to his assistance and others were soon on the scene, but it was at once evident that the victim of the sad accident was beyond human aid.

The remains were brought to the home of Mrs. Philena Johnston, in this city.

Joel Sumner Hodge was born in the state of New Hampshire, June 20, 1851, and died August 11, 1913, aged 62 years, 1 month and 22 days. He married Martha M. Chown in the year 1874 in Lyon County, Iowa, and to them eleven children were born, of whom there are seven living—three daughters and four sons—as follows: Mrs. Ella Johnson, of Los Angeles, Cal.; Forrest and Sumner Hodge, of Mc Henry, N.D.; Melvina Hale and Earl Hodge, of Burwell, Neb.; Alonzo Hodge, of Akron, Ia., and Mrs. Phebe Clasen of Wayne, Nebr., August 12, 1898.

Deceased had worked off and on in Akron and vicinity for a number of years. He had his faults and failings in common with all human kind, yet withal was jovial nature and generous hearted.

The surviving relatives, in their bereavement, have the sympathy of all who know them.

Funeral services will b conducted tomorrow, Friday, afternoon in the Akron M. E. church by Rev. R. L. Stuart. Interment will be made in Riverside Cemetery.
