Walter "Bud" Bernhardt, 82, of Akron, Iowa passed away Thursday, May 5, 2011 at his home in Akron following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa. Marie Lykken, Chaplain from Hospice of Siouxland will officiate. Cremation will follow the service. Visitation with the family present will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Walter Bernhardt, Jr. was born December 15, 1928 in Akron, Iowa, the son of Walter, Sr. and Alice (Carstens) Bernhardt. He attended school in Westfield and Merrill. Bud was united in marriage to Bessie Onnen in February 22, 1953. To this union, three children were born: Tim, Mike, and Kathy. They later divorced. Bud worked for Barwick Implement in Akron for several years before going to work for Heyl Truck Lines in Akron as a mechanic. Bud later married Inez Mack on May 22, 1982 in Akron. After retiring in 1990, Bud continued to work part time for Heyl's, until fully retiring in 2004. Bud served for 18 years on the Akron Volunteer Fire Department. Through the years, he enjoyed camping and fishing. But most of all, he enjoyed the times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife of over 28 years, Inez of Akron, IA; his three children: Tim Bernhardt (Louise) of Akron, Mike Bernhardt (Debbie) of Omaha, NE, and Kathy Wiggs (Dan) of Sioux City, IA; 4 step children: Dee Sawyers (Roger) of Fremont, NE, Richard Bowman of Fremont, NE, Bonny Christiansen (Randy) of Fremont, NE, and Kathy Bowman of Fremont, NE; 6 grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Glen and Harry; and a sister: Eudora Jones.
