Wilma "Bebe" Smith, 83, of Akron, Iowa passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at the Akron Care Center in Akron. Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 10, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. Pastor Beryl Hicks and Reverend Jean Morse will officiate. Inurnment of her ashes will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation with the family present will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at the Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Following the visitation, her body will be cremated.
Wilma Loretta Heyl was born December 31, 1928 in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of Lester W. and Wilma F. (Herzig) Heyl. She attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School. Following her schooling, she worked for a short time at Thorson Drug in Akron. She was united in marriage to Eldon "Smitty" Smith on October 22, 1948 in Akron. The couple farmed in Union County, South Dakota for many years. In 1997, they retired from farming and moved to Akron. Smitty passed away September 25, 1998 in Akron. Bebe continued to live at home in Akron until February of 2008, when she became a resident at the Akron Care Center. Bebe was longtime member of the First Church of Christ in Akron, having been active in the ladies aide for many years. She was a 26-year member of the Hoschler American Legion Auxiliary in Akron. Through the years, Bebe enjoyed playing cards, games, and dancing. But most of all, she loved the times spent visiting with family and friends. She will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her children: Mike Smith (Vicki) of Manly, IA, and Marlene Dietrich (Chuck) of Akron; her grandchildren: Wade Smith (Tracie) and their children, Noah and Hallie, Wendy Oetken (Lance) and their daughter, Olivia, Kelly Aldazabal (Jason), Kerry Smith, Wes Dietrich (Kara) and their children, Coye, Carter, and Chase, Abby Mahoney (Joel) and their children, Ashlynn, Teagen, and Logan, and Martin Dietrich and his son, Titus; her siblings: Lois Muck (Jerry), Janet Grimsley (Gail), Mary Wright (Robert), Jo Ellen Baack (Ed), Margaret Lias (Bob), Cheryl Gallaugher (Dean), and Carla Vernard (Larry); many nieces and nephews; and her special friend: Lyle McGinnis and his family.
She was preceded by her parents; her husband, Eldon "Smitty" Smith; a brother: George Heyl; and her sister: Valda Cosgrove.Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel
