AKRON, Iowa -- Robert V. Root, 91, of Akron passed away Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, at the Sioux Valley Care Center in Vermillion, S.D.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Akron, Iowa, with Msgr. Richard Zenk officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Akron. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today with the family present after 6 p.m. and a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. at Carlsen Funeral Home-Schroeder Chapel, Akron.
Robert Vincent Root was born Feb. 4, 1914, in Akron, Iowa, the son of Robert Ross and Anna Mae (Montagne) Root. He was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. He attended Sayles Country school in Union County, South Dakota and later Akron High School, where he graduated in 1931. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Marie Seyler on Feb. 4, 1936 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Akron. Together, they are the parents of four children: Marilyn, Richard, Beverly, and Julie.
The couple farmed in Union County for more than 40 years. After retiring in 1975, they moved to Akron. Following his retirement from farming, he worked as a caretaker of the Akron parks for several years. The couple wintered in Harlingen, Texas, for more than 13 years. His wife passed away Dec. 24, 2002. For the past few years, he had been a resident at Sioux Valley Care Center in Vermillion.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Akron. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing, and bowling.
Survivors include his four children, Marilyn Heeren and her husband Verne, Richard Root and his wife Rosemary and Julie Nason and her husband Tom, all of Akron and Beverly Donily of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Teddy Earnest of Akron; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Phyllis; a sister Vivian Nason; a granddaughter: Sheryl K. Heeren; a great-granddaughter Alexa M. Tarrell; and a great-grandson Rainier R. Root.
Casket bearers will be his grandsons: Gary Heeren, Kurt Heeren, Kraig Heeren, Kevin Heeren, Travis Donily, Joel Nason, and Robert Root. Honorary Casket Bearers will be his granddaughters: Terri Meeks, Tricia Tarrell, Jeaneen Moore, and Kim Donily.
