Gerald Herman, 84, of Villisca, Iowa passed away Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa with Reverend Jason Larson of the United Methodist Church of Le Mars officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 will be at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars, Iowa. Visitations with the family present will be after 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitations will continue Wednesday from noon until service time. Additional services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 14, 2010 at Nodaway United Methodist Church, Nodaway, Iowa with Reverend Gordon Scott officiating. Pallbearers will be Lee Herman, Dean Bohlken, Dan Bohlken, Brad Herman, Tim Herman, and Gary Herman.

Gerald Virgil Herman was born January 14, 1926 West of Le Mars, Iowa to Harvey and Mabel (Gabel) Herman. He attended rural school in Plymouth County and high school in Le Mars. Following high school, Gerald worked as a farm hand until he was drafted into the U.S. Army on September 20, 1950. He served in Korea from February 27, 1951 until January 30, 1952. He was awarded the Purple Heart as a result of wounds incurred in combat. In addition he was awarded the Combat Infantryman''s Badge, Korean Service Medal, and 2 Bronze Campaign Stars. Following discharge from the Army, Gerald farmed for several years, worked for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Co. and in 1973 began work for Parker Hannifin in Red Oak, Iowa where he retired in 1993. Throughout his life he enjoyed cars and antique tractors. He received great pleasure restoring a Model A Ford car and a 1945 John Deere tractor driving them in parades and showing them to family and friends. He had been a member of the Model A Ford Club of America, the Villisca American Legion Post, the Indian Creek Historical Society & Museum and the Tarkio Valley Antique Tractor Association.

Survivors include a son, Jeff Herman and his wife Kim of Red Oak, Iowa; a daughter, Lori Siefering and her husband Ron of Malvern, Iowa; a granddaughter, Sydnee Herman of Red Oak; his siblings, Eva Varenhorst of Le Mars, Marjorie Willer and her husband Virgil of Akron, Delores Bohlken of Le Mars, Shirley Baker and her husband Verlyn of Pickstown, SD, Gladys Mroczkowski of Le Mars, Milford Herman and his wife Sharon of Grand Terrace, CA, and Donald Herman and his wife Gloria of Urbandale; 2 sisters-in-law, Estella Herman and Nancy Herman both of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, Leland in infancy, Milton, Willard and Duane; in-laws, Harry Varenhorst, Robert Mroczkowski, Don Bohlken, and Elizabeth Herman.
