Mrs. Anna Ludwig Pioneer Woman Taken By Death Came to Plymouth County In Covered Wagon

Death claimed Mrs. Anna Ludwig, 80, resident of Plymouth county for the past seventy years, widely known pioneer woman, at the Sacred Heart hospital in this city after an illness of only a few days Thursday night. Death was caused by complications from gall bladder trouble and Thursday noon she was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Anna Junck was born July 2, 1859, in Schleswig, Germany, and when an infant of nine months was brought to America by her parents. She was the oldest in a family of twelve children. Her parents settled on a farm near Freeport, Illinois, where they lived ten years and then migrated to Plymouth county, making the trip in a covered wagon drawn by oxen.

Settled In Hungerford

Her father bought eighty acres of land in Hungerford township in section 35 paying 75 cents an acre for the piece. Anna Junck was brought up amid pioneer surroundings and attended rural school and helped in the farm work and was married to Fritz Ludwig October 3, 1879. Mr. Ludwig died in 1895 and she was left with a large family of young children whose maintenance and care required all her energy and time and right nobly she fulfilled the duty.

She was the mother of nine children, two of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by Henry Ludwig of Sioux City, George, Fritz and Herbert of Hungerford, Leonard A Ludwig of LeMars, auditor of Plymouth county, Mrs. Walter Muecke of Lincoln township, Mrs. Emma Casper of Hungerford, 19 grandchildren and five great grandchildren and one brother, Henry Junck, of Leeds. Mrs. Ludwig of late years made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Muecke, of Lincoln township.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon with services in the Trinity Lutheran church, Rev. H. D. Stahmer, the pastor, officiating and interment was made in the Hungerford cemetery. Mrs. Ludwig was widely acquainted in the county and was esteemed by all who knew her.
