Fern J. Kitzmann, 90, of Edmond, Oklahoma, formerly of Le Mars, died peacefully Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016 at Integris Health in Edmond, Oklahoma surrounded by her family. A Graveside Service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Rev. Russell Senstad of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux City will officiate.
Fern was born July 7, 1925 in three Lakes Township, Redwood County, Minnesota to Johann Heinrich Julius (John Henry) Zamzow and his wife, Gertrude Amelia (Wefers) Zamzow.
Fern and Karl were married June 8, 1944 in Clements, Minnesota. Karl was drafted into the Army Air Corps during World War Ii and stationed in Macon, Georgia where Fern followed. They were then transferred to Rapid City Army Air Base, now Ellsworth AFB. Karl was discharged from active duty and the couple remained in Rapid City, South Dakota where, for 21 years, Karl worked in the dairy business and Fern became a homemaker raising two children, Rita and Gary.
In 1965 they moved to Springfield, Minnesota where Karl managed the city power plant and worked for Lampert Lumber Co. When Lamperts closed in Springfield they transferred to the Lamperts in Le Mars.
Karl passed away in 1996.
Fern remained in Le Mars for several years until she decided, in 2000, to take advantage of her daughter, Rita's offer to go live in Oklahoma with her and her husband. Fern resided happily there until her health started failing her these last few weeks.
She is survived by her son, Gary (Jean) of Sioux City, her daughter, Rita (Dennis) of Edmond, Oklahoma, five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, a sister in Redwood Falls, Minnesota and a brother in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota.
