LE MARS, Iowa - Donald LeRoy Winchester, 79, of Le Mars died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church E.L.C.A., in Le Mars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Wasmer Post 241 of Le Mars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mr. Winchester was born Oct. 17, 1918, in Newcastle, Neb., the son of George and Cora L. (Chamberlain) Winchester. He moved with his family to Le Mars in 1919. He attended Le Mars Community High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed overseas.

He married Irene Martfeld on Oct. 1, 1947, in Le Mars. He drove a tank wagon for Nis Nissan for several years before he operated the Skelly Station in Le Mars. In 1949, he was employed with the Plymouth County Road Maintenance crew, retiring in 1978, after 28 years. He later worked for Sioux Tools in Le Mars from 1978 to 1983. She died Nov. 30, 1981.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church E.L.C.A.. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and horses.

Survivors include a daughter, Sally Winchester of Le Mars; two sisters and their husbands, Dorothy and Paul Benson of Milford, Iowa and Lois and Stanley King of Le Mars; his special friend, Rose Vanderharr of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Larry; and two sisters, Mildred and Fern Winchester.

Pallbearers will be David and Bruce Kruse, Jerry Brock, Denny Schleef, Mike Wiener and Orville Durr.
